Meeting a person full of wisdom is indeed a rare opportunity. PGEN JOHN SOSITO, our guest speaker, gave us hope that PNP will become the best government organization in our country if all of its men understand ethics. Ethics is a moral principle of values that govern a person's personality. In PNP, uniformed members commit themselves to the democratic way of life and values; and maintain the direction of public accountability. They shall always uphold the Constitution and show loyalty to the country, its people, and organizations above their commitment to any other individual.

PBGen Sosito's charisma was evident when he spoke to us, but his humility made him much more appealing. His statement marked his wisdom: "I don't have any remarkable achievements during my tenure in the organization. Still, I am just an ordinary policeman who follows what to do and does the work righteously."

All of us were very much delighted when he recited the law enforcement code of ethics and was able to explain its definition by heart. He continually reiterated that a man's success depends on good character and not his skills alone. Furthermore, he also gave an introduction to leadership. He mentioned that there are about 7 million definitions of leadership, but despite its number, he believes that it can encapsulate leadership in the ability to influence others righteously. Accordingly, as a future law enforcer, the essential skill that needs to be established may be gained from reading more leadership books, specifically historical ones, and taking into heart their teachings. The ability to influence others, subordinates, personnel, and the like depends not solely on your experiences. We can also gain wisdom from the experiences of other successful leaders who came before us throughout history.

During our discussion, we reiterated that a leader must be knowledgeable in everything. We are honed to read not just to absorb information but to be able to apply it effectively. The success of a mission depends upon the leader and their rapport with his members. If members can give their full support to their leader, they can function effectively.

His overall discussion focused on being an effective leader with a character aligned with the ethical doctrine of the Philippine National Police. When it comes to leadership, competencies determine what a person can do. Commitment determines what they want to do, and character determines what they will do. Character is foundational for effective decision-making. Because of a leader's shortcomings in their competencies, mistakes result. Leadership with good character radiates a spirit of excellence.
