WHY THE CELEBRATION?

Let me tell you a little history about the commemoration of the said battle. On January 23, 1900, the war was fought by the 3rd Battalion of the 47th infantry, composed of roughly 800 Filipino farmers led by Commander Antonio Reyes against the Americans. A bomb was released across the defensive trench (then San Rafael Bridge), composed of almost 200 Filipinos. This historic event has been celebrated by Albayanos, known as the Battle of Legazpi Pylon. January 23, 2023, was the 123rd Commemoration of the Battle of Legazpi Pylon. Present at the said event was the Regional Director of the Philippine National Police, BRIG GEN RUDOLPH DIMAS as the guest speaker. I was allowed to act as an additional security force and support the Regional Director. In his speech, he highlighted the bravery of the then-fighters and their patriotism and love of the country. It is an honor to offer one’s life to the country. I, as a Bikolana, have always been proud of my roots. Getting to know in-depth knowledge of history that showcases bravery, patriotism, and courage, I have never been more proud.
One of the speakers was Vice-Mayor Robert Cristobal on behalf of Mayor Geraldine Rosal. In his speech, he emphasized that although we are not at war, the younger generation still faces battles, such as the war against corruption, drugs, and the Covid-19 pandemic. As a youth, we all have unknown fighting that we are currently facing. (2)
The viewer of the event ignited my goal to love and serve the country. Some heroes have been unsung during the war. However, as modern-day Filipinos who benefit from our ancestors’ blood, sweat, and tears, we should always strive to remember them.
Today’s Wrap-Up:
Remembering our heritage is essential for us to move forward. Wars are different, but we, in our hearts, are all unsung heroes in our stories. Whatever battle we may face today, we should continue fighting and choose our actions wisely.
